We take the Chief up to Arlington from Martha Lake and the restoration
begins...
December 16, 1989
We gather everyone up and pick up the Chief from a couple of hangars
at Martha Lake airport. A typically foggy and damp December day north of
Seattle.
Here's the Chief as we picked her up that morning. It had been
moved from the original hangar where we first looked her over.
The rest of the photos pretty much speak for themselves....loading up the
plane. Notice the silver dope on the wings. They were
doped in cold weather and the silver never really got into the wave of
the fabric. So you could literally take a corner and
peel the silver dope off with your fingers. Of course, there were
a few areas that did have a good grip. A dull butter knife could
lift those up (and also make some nice holes in the fabric!)....only a
few areas needed to get softened with MEK and taken care of with that....
We pick up the wings to put them in the trailer... they were pretty dusty and the dope was certainly peeling, but the
Ceconite underneath looks good and tests like new...
Time to load up the Chief into the trailer and head north to Arlington....
